If you’re planning a move, you’ve likely already asked the big questions: What do we keep? Who’s helping? Where are the boxes? But here’s one more decision that can make a huge difference… When should you actually move?
It might not sound as important as finding a van or remembering where you packed the kettle, but the day of the week you choose to move can affect everything from price to stress to how long it takes to get into your new place.
And yes, there are better days than others.
Here’s what we’ve learned about moving day timing, why weekday moves are often the winner, and how to work out what’s best for your own situation.

Why midweek moving win (almost every time)
Most people instinctively choose to move on a Saturday. It feels practical. No need to take time off work or disrupt the school run. But this is exactly why Saturdays get booked up fast, prices go up, and availability drops.
Monday to Thursday tends to be the sweet spot. Fewer bookings means:
- Lower moving costs
- More flexibility with van hire or professional movers
- Less traffic on the roads during the day
- More likely your building’s lift, concierge or loading bay will be available
If you can take a day or two off work, a midweek move makes the whole process calmer. It also gives you the weekend to unpack, settle in and maybe even explore the new neighbourhood.
Things to consider before choosing your moving day
Every move is different, so the best day for you might depend on more than just price. Here’s what else to think about:
Distance
Longer moves mean more time on the road. Avoid Fridays and Sundays when motorways are busier, and steer clear of bank holidays and school breaks. Moving midweek means fewer traffic delays and easier parking, especially in busy boroughs.
Weather
While we can’t control the weather (this is London, after all), try to avoid extreme heat, rain or snow if possible. Moving on a Tuesday in mild weather is far better than dragging boxes in a summer heatwave or icy sleet.
Traffic
Traffic in London can turn even a short move into a long day. Weekday mornings and late afternoons are quieter once the commuter rush has passed. Aim for late morning moves to beat the early chaos and finish before the after-school gridlock.
School or work schedules
If you have children, a weekend might still work best to avoid disrupting school routines. Just remember to book movers well in advance as weekends fill up quickly, especially in spring and summer.
Best days to move. Ranked
Monday to Thursday: Generally cheaper, less traffic, more flexible
Friday: Still manageable but can be busier, especially heading into the weekend
Saturday: High demand, higher rates, limited availability
Sunday: Least popular for a reason – limited movers, access restrictions and usually more effort
If you can move on a Tuesday or Wednesday, you’ll likely save money, avoid traffic and have your pick of booking slots.
Other tips for a smoother move (no matter what day you choose)
- Start early. Morning moves are calmer, cooler and give you the full day to unpack.
- Plan your route. Make sure your driver knows the best way in and out of both properties.
- Book early. Whether it’s a van hire or moving company, secure your spot at least two weeks in advance.
- Clear paths. Make sure your stairs, corridors and doorways are free of boxes and clutter on the day.
- Check parking. Especially in London flats, you may need to book parking permits or loading zones.
- Keep a small bag of essentials (tea bags, chargers, loo roll, toothbrushes) in easy reach.
Final thoughts
There is no perfect day to move. But with the right planning, you can choose the day that works for your budget, your schedule and your nerves. Midweek moves may not feel as convenient at first glance, but they come with perks that weekend slots just can’t offer — especially in a city like London.
Whatever day you choose, the key is to stay organised, stay realistic and build in a little breathing room. Because the less pressure you feel on moving day, the more energy you’ll have to actually enjoy your new home.
